Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended the growth of African payments company Flutterwave, noting its reported processing of over $50 billion in transactions across 36 countries within a decade.
The governor spoke at Flutterwave’s 10th anniversary gala held at The Delborough Lagos, where political leaders, business executives and entertainment figures gathered to mark the milestone.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted the role of resilience and opportunity in Nigeria’s economic development, urging continued support for young entrepreneurs seeking to build globally competitive ventures.
He reflected on Nigeria’s telecommunications transformation over the past two decades, recalling a period when international communication was costly and limited. According to him, reforms in the sector created a foundation for the growth of digital services and technology-driven businesses.
The governor also referenced the leadership of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stating that earlier economic reforms contributed to Nigeria’s technological expansion.
Commending Flutterwave’s founder and Chief Executive Officer, Olugbenga Agboola, Sanwo-Olu described the company’s growth as reflective of Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.
“We must give young Nigerians the opportunity to thrive,” the governor said, emphasising the importance of education, infrastructure and an enabling environment for innovation.
The event drew prominent attendees, including former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MTN Nigeria Ernest Ndukwe, and Dr Stanley Uzochukwu of Stanel Group.
Entertainment personalities such as Tiwa Savage and actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde were also in attendance.
Flutterwave, founded in 2016, provides payment infrastructure services across multiple African markets. The anniversary event served as a platform for discussions around Nigeria’s digital economy and the broader role of technology in economic growth.
