Abia State marked the 70th birthday of former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. General Onyeabo Azubike Ihejirika on Friday, February 13, 2026, with a grand reception at the Abia State International Conference Center, honouring his 38 years of distinguished military service.

The celebration drew top serving and retired military officers, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sending Dr. Kingsley Udeh as his representative. Tinubu praised General Ihejirika as a patriot, Pan-Nigerian, and courageous leader who led the Army during a critical period in the fight against insurgency.
Highlighting inclusivity in national security, Tinubu noted that General Ihejirika, the last COAS of Southeast origin before his administration, paved the way for Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogala and Air Marshal Sunday Aneke—both of Southeast extraction—to lead the Navy and Air Force, respectively.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu Otti said the celebration was intentional, noting that Ihejirika “is a man who said no to the status quo.” The Governor also commissioned landmark projects, including the Omenuko Bridge and the 30-kilometre Abam–Arochukwu Road, as part of the birthday events.
“General Ihejirika chairs the Abia State Security Council on merit, and his contributions over the last 32 months speak for themselves,” Governor Otti said.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, and retired General Ike Nwachukwu commended Ihejirika for his dedication to national security.
A lecture titled “The Role of Leadership in Strengthening National Security and Governance” was delivered by former Kaduna State Governor Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, emphasising that visionary, inclusive, and integrity-driven leadership is essential for national development.

Elated by the honour, General Ihejirika thanked God for guiding his military career and acknowledged the mentors and colleagues who shaped his journey, including Generals Ike Nwachukwu and Musa, while reflecting on his decades of service to the nation.
