At least three persons have been confirmed dead following a bandit attack and cattle rustling in the Garga community, Kanam Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The incident occurred on the night of 16th February 2026, when armed bandits invaded the community, opened fire on residents, and rustled several cattle.
Reports indicate that the assailants also carried out kidnappings, leaving several families in distress.
While some casualties were initially reported at the scene, the death toll rose to three by the morning of 17th February, including victims who later succumbed to their injuries.
Other injured persons are receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Dengi, and surrounding medical facilities.
Expressing concern, a local resident, Buhari Ishaq Tukur, said, “This tragic incident highlights the growing insecurity facing rural communities, particularly the persistent threats of banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling. The continued attacks are causing loss of lives, displacement of families, and destruction of livelihoods.”
He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, rescue kidnapped victims, and provide adequate protection to vulnerable communities. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and all those affected by this unfortunate incident,” Ishaq added.
The Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) of the Joint Task Force in Jos confirmed that investigations into the attack are ongoing.
