Two die as container truck rams into another in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)

Two people were killed in the early hours of Wednesday after a collision involving two fully laden 40-foot container trucks along the Cele inward section of the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in Lagos, authorities said.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that one of the truck drivers and a suspected miscreant lost their lives in the crash, which occurred around Mile 2 on the busy freight route.

According to LASTMA, the driver of one of the trucks (registration number T-392 LA) was trapped inside the cabin following the impact and was later confirmed dead.

The second victim, described as a suspected miscreant, was found beneath one of the trucks during recovery operations, though officials said the circumstances of his presence at the scene were not immediately clear.

Rescue and recovery efforts were carried out by LASTMA’s emergency team, with technical support from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force (Nigeria Police Force), Ilasa Division, provided perimeter control and secured the scene.

The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later evacuated the bodies, allowing for the gradual restoration of traffic along the corridor, a key artery for port-bound and outbound cargo.

LASTMA said the incident was formally handed over to the Ilasa Police Division for investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Commenting on the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and warned of the risks associated with high-volume freight movement, especially at night.

He urged operators of articulated vehicles to adhere strictly to speed limits and safety regulations, noting that nighttime operations require heightened vigilance.

Motorists were also advised to drive cautiously and to promptly report hazardous situations on major highways to emergency authorities.
