Two killed as container trucks collide on Oshodi–Apapa Expressway

Accident along the Cele inward axis of Oshodi–Apapa Expressway at Mile 2, Lagos

A truck driver and another man have died in a fatal road crash involving two fully laden 40-foot containerised trucks along the Cele inward axis of the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway at Mile 2, Lagos.

The accident claimed the life of the driver of one of the trucks, marked T-392 LA, and a man whose presence within the operational perimeter of the articulated vehicles could not be immediately established at the time of emergency response.
The impact left the driver severely trapped in the steering compartment of his truck, requiring technical extrication by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Rescue and Recovery Team.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and LASTMA recovered the driver’s remains, while the body of the second victim was evacuated from beneath one of the trucks after an intensive search conducted under strict safety protocols.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ilasa Police Division provided security at the scene to ensure effective perimeter control and preserve evidence.

The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later evacuated the remains of both victims, allowing recovery efforts to continue and vehicular movement to resume gradually along the busy corridor.
Upon completion of operations, LASTMA handed over the incident to officers of the Ilasa Police Division for investigation to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the crash.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s call for disciplined driving, urging operators of articulated vehicles to adhere strictly to prescribed speed limits and comply with traffic regulations.
Bakare-Oki said nocturnal freight operations require heightened vigilance and the use of adequate warning mechanisms to prevent avoidable tragedies.

“We are enjoining motorists to exercise prudence, remain compliant with traffic regulations and promptly notify emergency authorities whenever hazardous situations are observed along the highways,” he said.
