Civil Society Organisation, Citizens’ Gavel has urged Tunji Disu, the newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, to lead a comprehensive reorientation of the Nigeria Police Force, especially the implementation of the Police Act, 2020.
The group called on the acting IGP to build on his established record by embedding a citizen-focused culture throughout the national police hierarchy.
Citizens Gavel operations lea d, Ajibade Oluwafemi, in a statement on Thursday, highlighted Disu’s tenure as Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) from 2015 to 2021, where he earned widespread recognition for professionalism and public service.
Under his leadership, Olufemi said the RRS became known for ethical conduct, assisting accident victims, helping stranded motorists, and rejecting bribes demonstrating that effective law enforcement can coexist with respect for citizens’ rights.
“Mr. Disu is widely recognised as someone who treats policing as a public service rather than a coercive force. His appointment comes at a time when Nigerians are seeking renewed confidence in the police and a system that upholds human rights while maintaining public safety”, he said.
The group emphasised the importance of ensuring that officers operate within a framework that prioritises service over intimidation, and that all personnel are trained in modern policing methods, ethical investigation, and techniques for de-escalating conflict.
It also urged that the welfare and well-being of officers be improved, noting that fair remuneration, access to healthcare, adequate equipment, and decent housing are essential to professional conduct and effective service delivery.
The organisation further stressed the need for adherence to the Police Act 2020 and continuity of ongoing reform initiatives, with clear benchmarks and public accountability.
Citizens’ Gavel expressed optimism that Disu would extend his reputation for integrity and professionalism from Lagos to the national stage, leaving a lasting positive impact on the Nigeria Police Force and strengthening public trust in law.
