NPF, UNMAS train personnel on counter-IEDs in Northeast

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in collaboration with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), has trained its personnel on the counter-Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Northeast.

According to the Borno State Police Command, the seven-month training commenced from July 28, 2025, to February 27, 2026, at the Maiduguri Police Headquarters.

Spokesperson of the command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nahum Daso, disclosed on Saturday in Maiduguri via a statement that, “The NPF Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) training school, Maiduguri, in collaboration with UNMAS, has successfully concluded a series of specialised training for a period of seven  months.”

He said: “The counter-IEDs training was coordinated by the NPF EOD-CBRN Command in partnership with UNMAS,” stating that this is part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen counter-IED and explosive hazard response capacity in the Northeast region of the country.

Beyond the detection and prevention of IEDs, the ASP added: “The trainees were carefully selected from the NPF and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) from various states across the North-East.”

Daso further revealed: “The intensive theoretical and practical training covers critical topics on explosive hazard awareness, conventional munitions disposal levels 1, 2 and 3, individual first aid kit, and the IED disposal in situ in saving people’s lives and property. ”

At the end of the programme,15 police officers completed the Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDDis) course.

Daso stated the training comprises both theoretical and intensive practical sessions by exposing the participants to International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) procedures, with emphasis on the identification, detection, location, mitigation of hazards, and the safe disposal of Explosive Remnants of War (ERWs) and IEDs.

During the graduation ceremony, participants conducted practical demonstrations, including IED disposal procedures, sand modelling exercises, and the use of the F-3 MineLab detector, showcasing the knowledge and skills acquired throughout their training sessions.

Dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony included the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Police EOD-CBRN, Force Headquarters Abuja, DCP Helari Ndoma, who represented the Commissioner of Police EOD-CBRN; Chief of the Mine Action Programme, UNMAS, Edwin Feigmane; Brigadier General E. E. Igoche, Police Military Coordinator; and Brigadier General A. S. Saleh, who represented the Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, Joint Task Force North-East. Other signatures from the security sector included ACP Jawi Muhammed, who represented the Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command.

In their remarks, the participants were urged to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, adhere strictly to established safety protocols, and apply the knowledge they had gained to safeguard lives and property.

They were also encouraged to serve as force multipliers by cascading the training to other personnel within their respective formations in the country.
