Governor Otti flags off multi-billion naira General Hospital in Ukwa East

Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has formally flagged off the construction of a multi-billion naira ultra-modern General Hospital in Ohanku Ndoki, Ukwa East Local Government Area.
The land for the hospital was generously donated by the traditional ruler of Ikwuorie Ohanku, His Royal Majesty Eze Apostle Chibuzor, who revealed that he provided 100 plots of land initially intended for industrial projects.

He explained his decision: “I bought the land for a factory and other commercial activities, but the life of my people is much more important. When I saw the need for healthcare, I decided to donate the land to secure the lives of my people. God brought Governor Otti and this hospital to Ukwa land.”
Governor Otti commended the traditional ruler’s gesture, describing it as a vital step toward addressing the healthcare needs of Ndoki residents, who previously had to travel long distances for medical attention.

The governor emphasized that the hospital is part of his administration’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to every corner of the state, ensuring an inclusive system that meets the needs of rural communities.
Health Commissioner Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche highlighted the dire health situation in Ukwa East, noting that maternal and child mortality rates were among the highest in Abia State: “This area was neglected by previous administrations. Ukwa East is one of three local governments contributing disproportionately to maternal and child mortality in the country. With this hospital, we will provide modern facilities, skilled manpower, and equipment to reduce these rates.”

Community leaders and dignitaries at the event praised the initiative. Hon. Chris Nkwonta, member of the 10th National Assembly representing Ukwa East and West, remarked:
“This is the first time Ukwa East is being remembered with a project of this size. Regardless of party affiliations, we must prioritize development. I will support this project to ensure its completion and operation.”

Former Senate President Dr. Adolphus Wabara lauded Governor Otti for prioritizing healthcare infrastructure above political lines, noting that history will remember his administration for this holistic approach.
Prince Okey Kanu, the state Information Commissioner and a native of the area, expressed relief and optimism: “Our people have had to travel kilometers to private facilities, especially women in labor. High infant and maternal mortality rates will now be addressed with this General Hospital.”

The groundbreaking ceremony marks a significant milestone in improving healthcare access for Ukwa East, promising a modern facility that meets international standards.
