The first son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Adamu Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.
Abubakar announced his resignation in a letter dated March 2, 2026, addressed to Governor Umaru Ahmadu Fintiri through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). He did not state the reasons for his decision to step down from the State Executive Council.
His resignation comes amid recent political developments in the state following Governor Fintiri’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued Monday night by his personal assistant and media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro, Abubakar expressed gratitude to the governor “for the rare privilege and confidence bestowed upon him to serve in such a strategic capacity.”
He described his appointment as an “honour of immense significance” and pledged continued loyalty and support to the administration’s developmental vision.
Abubakar also thanked his father for granting him the moral support and blessing to serve the people of Adamawa State. He commended the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Works and Energy, as well as directors, engineers and other staff members, for what he described as their professionalism and dedication to infrastructural development across the state.
The former commissioner further appreciated the people of Jada, his hometown, for their prayers and support throughout his tenure.
According to the statement, Abubakar said his resignation does not signal the end of his commitment to public service but marks the beginning of new avenues for developmental collaboration. He reaffirmed his readiness to continue contributing to the growth, unity and progress of Adamawa State.
Last Friday, Governor Fintiri announced his formal defection to the APC in a statewide broadcast, stating that members of his cabinet and the PDP in the state had moved with him to the ruling party.
Within 24 hours of the announcement, 22 commissioners and special advisers in the state also declared their defection to the APC after leaving the PDP.
