The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to comply with a judgment of the Federal High Court directing it to recognise the leadership of Edozie Njoku.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Anselem Nebeife, in a communique released after a NEC meeting in Abuja on Friday, said it had ratified decisions earlier taken by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and reaffirmed the authority of court rulings concerning the party’s leadership.
The committee specifically referenced an order made on January 16, 2025, and the judgment delivered on March 5, 2025, by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which, according to the party, mandated INEC to monitor its Emergency National Convention held on January 17, 2025, and subsequently recognise the outcome of that convention.
NEC maintained that the court judgment affirmed the legitimacy of the Njoku-led leadership and urged the electoral commission to obey the ruling immediately.
“The NEC reaffirmed the validity and authority of the court order and judgment compelling INEC to recognise the outcome of the Emergency National Convention,” the communiqué stated, adding that respect for court decisions remains central to Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
The committee also used the meeting to address internal administrative issues within the party.
It noted that several positions on the National Working Committee had become vacant following the resignations of some members, who said they were frustrated by the delay in recognising the party’s leadership.
To restore administrative functionality, the NEC ratified the NWC’s recommendations to fill the vacant positions in accordance with the party’s constitution, as amended in 2025.
It explained that, under the party’s constitution, vacant positions in the NWC can be filled by the committee and ratified by NEC without convening a national convention, except in the case of the office of the national chairman.
In another development, the communique also approved the expulsion of three members, Muhyideen Imam, Nasiru Baba, and Chuks Nwoga, over alleged anti-party activities.
According to the release, the decision followed the recommendations of its disciplinary committee, which had earlier suspended the affected members in line with the party’s constitution.
The NEC said the actions of the expelled members were inconsistent with the principles and unity of the party, stressing that it would not tolerate conduct capable of undermining its leadership and organisational stability.
The party further assured its members nationwide of its commitment to constitutional order, internal discipline and the enforcement of the Federal High Court judgment on the leadership dispute.
