The Laguda family has called for stronger family ties and national unity as a foundation for moral renewal in Nigeria.
The call was made during the 11th edition of the Laguda Union Annual Ramadan Public Lecture held on February 28 at the Abdulwahab Folawiyo Central Mosque, Shitta Roundabout, Surulere.
The lecture, themed “Strengthening Family Bonds and Community Unity in the Light of Ramadan” and “Ramadan as a Catalyst for National Unity and Moral Renewal in Nigeria,” brought together religious leaders, family members and political figures.
Speaking at the event, Fuad Laguda, member representing Surulere I Federal Constituency and a descendant of the Laguda family, said unity at the national level begins from the family structure.
“Family brings unity. It is from family unity that you can have community unity, state unity and national unity,” he said.
He explained that the Laguda family maintains regular meetings and celebrates major religious festivities together, including Ramadan, Eid-el-Kabir and Christmas, as a way of strengthening bonds.
“It is not just during Ramadan that we sit together. We have monthly meetings and we try to celebrate festive periods together,” he said.
Laguda urged Nigerians to sustain the discipline and moral conduct observed during Ramadan beyond the fasting period.
He emphasised on the fear of God, as the central lesson of Ramadan, encouraging Muslims to maintain the values of self-restraint and righteousness after the holy month.
He also prayed for renewed hope, togetherness and prosperity in Nigeria.
In his lecture, Sheikh Abdul Gafar Adisa Aniyikaye, popularly known as Omo Baba Lagege, stressed the need for peaceful coexistence and collective responsibility among Nigerians.
Also speaking, Ustadh Mustapha Yahaya, Chief Mufaseer of Quranic Central Mosque, said unity is a religious obligation, noting that the Qur’an encourages Muslims to live in peace and harmony with others who do not oppose their faith.
He described the Qur’an as a divine manual for human affairs, reminding participants that it was revealed during Ramadan.
“If we look at Ramadan, the Qur’an was brought down in this month. It is the book God gave us as a guide to run our affairs in life,” he said.
The event was hosted by Alhaji Nasirudeen Omotayo Laguda, the Olori Ebi of the Laguda family, alongside Alhaji Muftau Bolaji, who served as co-chief host. A special prayer session was led by Imam Abdulrahman Mogaji.
