Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly on Monday commenced the screening of commissioner nominees submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Nine nominees arrived at the Assembly complex at about 10 a.m. and were ushered into the chamber to begin the screening exercise conducted by lawmakers.
The nominees include: Datonye Alasia, Tonye Bellgam, Temple Nwofor, Peters Nwagor, Mrs. Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, Lekue Kenneth, Otonye TKD Amachree, and Amairigha Hart.
A video of the exercise showed the nominees taking turns at the podium, introducing themselves and responding to questions from members of the Assembly as part of the confirmation process.
Governor Fubara had forwarded the list of nominees to the Assembly on March 5, 2026, following the dissolution of the State Executive Council.
Earlier, the Assembly directed the nominees to submit 40 copies of their curricula vitae, photocopies of their credentials, and evidence of tax compliance ahead of the screening.
The directive was contained in a notice issued by the Clerk of the House, Dr. Emeka Amadi, dated March 3, 2026.
The screening comes amid political developments in the state following the restoration of democratic governance after President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State on September 17, 2025.
The emergency rule, declared on March 18, 2025, led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy and members of the Assembly. The decision followed a prolonged political crisis linked to a power struggle between the governor and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over control of the state’s political structure.
With the emergency rule lifted, political activities and governance structures in the state have gradually returned to normal, including the reconstitution of the State Executive Council through the ongoing screening of commissioner nominees.
