Barely 24 hours after Boko Haram terrorists launched attacks on five military bases in Borno and Yobe states, troops of Sector 3 of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have foiled an attack by the Boko Haram terrorists on an Army base.
The troops killed dozens of them in the Doron Baga community of Kukawa Local Council in Borno State.
According to credible sources in Maiduguri, the fierce gun battle with the terrorists led to the neutralisation of dozens of them.
A source added that several rifles, arms and ammunition were also recovered during the encounter with the terrorists.
According to a military source, the terrorists, who emerged from the shores of Lake Chad, attacked the military base on Tuesday at about 2:12 a.m.
The source said that the fierce gun battle with the insurgents lasted for about an hour, before some of them fled with gunshot wounds to the Lake Chad Islands.
“Troops stood their ground and maintained tactical dominance throughout the engagement, which ended at 6:15 a.m.,” said the source.
The military source noted that even though several terrorists were killed in the fierce encounter, there were no casualties or equipment damage on the side of the Nigerian Army.
However, the military raised concerns about the possibility of a follow-up attack and urged the ground troops and other security operatives in the Lake Chad region to remain vigilant and sustain heightened security measures to protect people’s lives and property in the North-East region.
It was reported that the troops’ morale continues to remain high with follow-up operations and patrols to prevent any resurgence of terrorists’ activities in the Lake Chad region, comprising Niger, Cameroon, Nigeria and Chad.
