‘5,895 suspects arrested, 168 kidnap victims rescued by police in Enugu in one year’

Recovered arms and ammunition

The Police in Enugu State have arrested a total of 5,895 suspects for various criminal offences in the past year.

These suspects include 148 for armed robbery, 129 for kidnapping, 158 for murder, 48 for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, 210 for cultism and illicit drug trafficking, and 5,168 for offences like stealing, vandalism, human trafficking, fraud and house breaking.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed that the achievements, recorded between March 2025 and March 11, 2026, were as a result of a proactive and intelligence-driven policing strategy designed to restore public trust and ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.

He, however, also took journalists around to view the items recovered by his officials during the period.

Giwa, while reviewing the Command’s operational successes, noted that 168 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued from various forest hideouts within the period under review.

He mentioned other rescue operations that included 12 victims from Efeche Forest in Igbo-Eze North on March 6, 2026, recoveries of 105 firearms, including 22 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 automatic rifle.

He added that 665 rounds of live ammunition of various calibers and 118 stolen or snatched vehicles were recovered within the last twelve months.

Giwa further said that the Command had been relentless in its “bush-combing” operations, particularly in border forests between Enugu and Benue states where several kidnappers were neutralised during gun duels with police operatives.

Also while addressing the menace of sexual violence and domestic crimes, the police commissioner confirmed the arrest of 39 suspects for rape or defilement, which include the arrest of an 18-year-old for allegedly raping a neighbour’s wife and a 30-year-old man accused of impregnating his 12-year-old daughter.

He further mentioned a disturbing case of incest where a father was apprehended for allegedly abusing his two daughters, aged 17 and 12, vowing that all suspects would face the full weight of the law once investigations are concluded.

He linked the rise in violent crimes to drug abuse among youths and promised to continue targeting the distribution hubs of these prohibited substances.
