2027: Okorie urges Tinubu to halt ‘brewing anarchy’ in Nigeria

Chekwas Okorie

Nigeria’s reforms driving macroeconomic stability, investment, says Vietnam’s envoy
Elder statesman, Chekwas Okorie, has asked President Bola Tinubu to halt what he described as “brewing anarchy in Nigeria.”

In an open letter to the President, titled “Halt the brewing anarchy in Nigeria,” which he made available to The Guardian in Enugu yesterday, Okorie lamented the deplorable and unprecedented security situation in Nigeria, which he said had attracted international attention.

Although he underlined the sacrifices being made by Nigeria’s security agencies to contain the development, as well as efforts to push the state police initiative, he insisted that the deplorable situation requires the urgent intervention of the President as the chief security officer.

Okorie, who is the Convener/National Chairman, Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD), stated that the situation calls for more urgency because of the several flashpoints existing across the length and breadth of Nigeria, especially in an election year leading to the Presidential election of January 2027 and other elections thereafter.

He added: “The desperate actions and inflammatory rhetoric of political actors in the build-up to the forthcoming general elections have the dangerous tendency to trigger widespread anarchy that may overwhelm the fragile capacity of Nigeria’s security agencies that have been stretched to their limits already.

“The recent attack on Peter Obi and his associates in Edo State and the subsequent attack on Rotimi Amaechi in Rivers State are a few of the provocative and unprovoked attacks that could snowball into spiralling reprisal actions.

“Discerning Nigerians are waiting to hear quality proposals by politicians and their political parties, especially the ruling party, about what they intend to do differently to alleviate the plight of the citizens if allowed to serve in the offices of their aspiration after the 2027 elections.”

“Unfortunately, what we hear are threats, acerbic tantrums, and arrogant claims about how the forthcoming elections have been won and lost.”

Okorie reminded Tinubu of his responsibility towards fair, credible, and transparent elections in 2027, urging him to rein in some of his “overzealous aides and appointees to moderate their rhetoric and provocations.

Meanwhile, the Ambassador of Vietnam to Nigeria, Bui Quoc Hung, has commended Nigeria for what he described as significant progress in macroeconomic stability and improvements in the country’s investment climate.

The envoy gave the commendation yesterday during a courtesy visit to the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yiltwada, at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Hung remarked that Nigeria has made notable strides in stabilising its economy, particularly through efforts aimed at strengthening the naira and improving investor confidence.

According to him, the economic reforms being implemented by the Tinubu administration are already yielding positive outcomes. He noted that both Vietnam and Nigeria share several similarities, including their historical experiences, youthful populations, and strategic regional positions in Southeast Asia and West Africa, respectively.
