The Federal Government, yesterday, fulfilled its pledge to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, who won the FIBA AfroBasket Championship for a fifth straight time and a record seventh title last year.

Following their victory in Cote d’Ivoire last year, President Bola Tinubu in a reception held for the victorious girls, promised each of the players a three-bedroom flat at the Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Their coaches and management staff were also promised houses, $50, 000 each and national honours.

Yesterday in Lyon, France, where the team is participating in the 2026 FIBA World Cup qualifying tournament, officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) were on hand to officially present the documents for the houses and national honours to the players and the coaching crew.

The presentation was made by the NSC team led by its chairman, Shehu Dikko, marking a significant moment in the recognition of the team’s achievements.

With the presentation in Lyon, the government has now delivered on these commitments, ensuring that the athletes’ sacrifices and triumphs are tangibly rewarded.

D’Tigress, which defeated Mali 78–64 to clinch their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall, have cemented their place as Africa’s basketball powerhouse
