Botswana appoints Omoboriowo BPC vice chair

Akinwole Omoboriowo

The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has appointed Nigerian energy leader, Akinwole Omoboriowo, as board member and Vice Chairman.

The appointment, made by President Advocate, Duma Boko, comes as Botswana continues efforts to address electricity supply constraints and reform its power sector, including expanding renewable energy generation and strengthening its participation in regional power trade.

‎Omoboriowo has more than two decades of experience in utility-scale generation, project structuring and cross-border energy development.

He is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GENESIS Energy Group, where he has overseen power projects totalling over 780 megawatts in operation, construction and advanced development across several African countries and the United Kingdom.

The company’s development pipeline is reported to exceed 4.5 gigawatts.

His experience spans conventional power infrastructure development, distributed energy deployments in both renewable and gas segments, natural gas commercialisation, energy market reform, and energy investment financing.

The appointment comes at a time when Botswana’s domestic electricity generation has experienced fluctuations.

BPC is implementing its Maduo 26 strategy, a five-year transformation plan launched in 2022 to improve operational efficiency and financial performance.

The strategy aligns with national plans to diversify the energy mix, increase renewable generation and strengthen grid resilience under Botswana’s Integrated Resource Plan.

In a public LinkedIn post, Omoboriowo said he accepted the role with “humility” and a commitment to delivery.

‎“I assume this responsibility with humility, but with buoyancy, high commitment to duty, and unwavering dedication to delivery. The work ahead is substantial, but so too is the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a critical national institution at an important moment in its evolution,” he wrote.

‎His tenure as Vice Chairman coincides with the final phase of the Maduo 26 strategy, which is scheduled to conclude in 2026.
