Provost urges students to shun anti-social vices

Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology

Provost of Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT), Lagos, Dr. Onuoba Paul Chuks, has urged students to resist groups that operate and promote violence and other forms of negative behaviours.

Speaking at the 2026 matriculation of the college, he cautioned, ‘’students engaging in or planning to engage in secret cultism, gangsterism, Internet fraud, money rituals, fighting, intimidation, hard drugs, disobedience to constituted authorities, prostitution, indecent dressing and unnecessary disruption of academic calendar should either change and pursue the path of integrity or be shown the way out.’’

Speaking further, he said, “My candid advice is that you should not allow these activities to conflict with your education because carry over and non-progression to year two can be very expensive to both parents and students. So, be wary.”

Saying the management has zero tolerance for any form of examination malpractices, he added, ‘you are therefore advised to read all regulations regarding the conduct of examinations in this college.’

In conclusion, he urged them to be hardworking, disciplined and keep in focus their main objectives for being in the college, which is to acquire quality education and skills for a successful career in life.

On his part, Chairman Governing Board of the institution, MacDonald Kelechi Ebere observed the nation is blessed with vast marine and inland water resources.

To him, ‘our oceans, rivers, and coastal ecosystems hold enormous potential for food security, employment, technological advancement, and economic growth. Institutions like FCFMT exist to unlock that potential through knowledge, innovation, and a skilled workforce.’

As regards the students, he advised, ‘you are entering a world that is changing rapidly. Knowledge is expanding. Technology is evolving. The demands of society are increasing. The future will belong to those who are prepared, disciplined and willing to learn continuously.’
