Shettima debriefs Tinubu on Maiduguri security situation

Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at mercy of terrorists, says Obi
Vice President Kashim Shettima, yesterday, arrived in Lagos to brief President Bola Tinubu on the security situation in Maiduguri.

He is also to lead serving governors on Sallah homage to the President.

Shettima’s visit is coming after his trip to Maiduguri at the instance of the President, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment after multiple bomb explosions in the city.

The vice president is expected to update Tinubu on his findings, including engagements with affected families, community leaders, and relevant authorities during the condolence visit.

The meeting is also to felicitate the President on Eid-el-Fitr and to discuss strengthening inter-governmental collaboration to address emerging security threats and improve rapid response mechanisms across the country.

Shettima, in Maiduguri, had assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would decisively confront perpetrators of the multiple bomb explosions.

Meanwhile, former Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has said that Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at the mercy of terrorists.

In a post on his verified X handle, yesterday, Obi lamented what he described as a breakdown of governance and humanity.

Obi, while reacting to the wave of insecurity in Nigeria, especially in the northern part of the country, said reports that terrorists can issue orders for citizens to flee their ancestral homes without consequences are both heartbreaking and unacceptable.

He lamented that this means non-state actors in parts of Nigeria today have assumed the authority of the state, deciding who lives where and under what conditions.

“What we are witnessing in Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State, and indeed across our country, is tragic. It reflects a complete breakdown of governance and humanity.

“This is not how a nation should function. How did we get to a point where Nigerians are taking instructions from terrorists instead of their government? I have consistently maintained that no nation can progress when its people live in fear.

“This is no longer just a security issue; it is a national emergency. The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at the mercy of terror,” he stated.
