Independent election observers call for safety ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections

As Nigeria gears up for its 2027 general elections, a coalition of independent election observers has raised concerns over the safety of its members, urging authorities to provide protection and ensure a credible electoral process nationwide.

The appeal came on Monday from Chief Dr. Lazarus Nwachukwu, leader of a national delegation of observers representing groups such as the Centre for the Promotion of Peace and Unity, the National Council of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria, and the Forum of Independent Election Observers of Nigeria.

In the statement signed by Alhaji Bashiru Mohammed on behalf of the delegation, Nwachukwu called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the nation’s security agencies to ensure that the elections are free from intimidation, harassment, and the misuse of state institutions.

“Observers must be allowed to operate freely before, during, and after the elections,” Nwachukwu said, emphasizing that their work is vital to strengthening democracy and public confidence in the electoral process. “We will not allow anyone, regardless of status, to intimidate or undermine the work of this delegation.”

He highlighted that the delegation consists of experienced professionals and administrators with decades of election observation expertise. Their procedures include formally notifying electoral and security authorities of their activities, conducting courtesy visits to relevant institutions, and holding press briefings throughout the electoral process.

Nwachukwu also stated that the delegation will independently monitor election activities and provide reports to electoral bodies and other stakeholders to enhance Nigeria’s democratic system.

Looking ahead, the group plans to mobilize up to 5,000 independent observers for the 2027 elections, ensuring operations align with international best practices. He urged Nigerians to cooperate with observer teams to promote transparency and accountability during the polls.
