NURTW: FCT police deny shooting allegations, arrest seven suspects

The Ondo State Police Command

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has denied shooting allegations against it, just as it announced the arrest of seven suspects.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Force was aware of videos circulating on social media alleging that personnel of the Command shot at some members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at their headquarters in Garki II, Abuja, but described the allegations as false and misleading.

According to the FCT Police Command, the allegations and claims are only aimed at rousing public sentiments.

The statement read in part: “On March 23, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m., a distress call was received by the FCT Police Command reporting that about 300 individuals, armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows, had stormed the NURTW headquarters along Sapele Street, Garki II, Abuja, and were removing items from the premises.

“This action degenerated into a physical confrontation when other members of the NURTW attempted to resist them.

“The following suspects were arrested at the scene: Sulaiman A. Musa, Nasiru Ibrahim, Alhaji Sadisu Musa, Dalha Suleiman, Abdullahi Garba, Saheed Fojebi and Ibikunle T Baruwa.”

The Command said that those arrested had been charged to the Magistrate’s Court 1 Wuse Zone 2, while normalcy has since been restored to the area.

However, the leadership crisis within the NURTW deepened yesterday when Tajudeen Baruwa took over the union’s national secretariat in Abuja, displacing Musiliu Akinsanya, a.k.a. MC Oluomo, after a series of court rulings reshaped the union’s leadership structure.

Baruwa, flanked by supporters from across the country, told journalists at the secretariat that the takeover was backed by two court judgments affirming his position.

He said that the union had earlier notified the police, attaching certified copies of the judgments to facilitate the recovery of the secretariat.

He, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the response from the law enforcement agencies, describing it as unconvincing.

This, he said, prompted a follow-up notice issued days earlier that declared the union’s intention to resume operations in line with the rulings.
