Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman’s Transformative Tenure at Nasarawa State University, Keffi

As Nasarawa State University‘s first female Vice-Chancellor, she embodies a simple yet profound truth: ability knows no gender. Her ascension to the helm of one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing universities is proof of her mettle, a blend of grit, intellect, and vision. With a track record of turning challenges into opportunities, she is rewriting the narrative, proving that leadership is not about titles but about the impact one creates.
Professor Liman’s academic path reflects her passion for knowledge and commitment to excellence. Having excelled in her secondary education at Government Science College, Wase, she proceeded to the University of Jos, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Islamic Studies in 1998 with an upper second class honours, where she served as Graduate Assistant on NYSC. She then pursued postgraduate studies at the same university and earned a Master’s degree in 2002 and a PhD in 2010 all in Islamic Studies.
The resourceful scholar continued to push boundaries, obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Nasarawa State University (NSUK) in 2015 and a Professional Certificate in Banking and Finance in 2018. Her academic achievements showcase her exceptional scholarship and ability to excel in diverse fields, solidifying her position as an outstanding leader in Nigeria’s academia.
Professor Liman’s academic career at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, began on 10th October 2002, when she joined as an Assistant Lecturer, marking the start of a remarkable journey. She rose through the ranks with distinction, becoming a full Professor of Islamic Studies on 1st October 2017, reflecting her dedication and scholarly excellence. Her academic prowess was further recognised when she delivered the 35th Professorial Inaugural Lecture on 26th September, 2023, with a thought-provoking topic, “Deconstructing the Notion of Oppression and Suppression of Women in Islam: Revisiting the Islamic Versus Universal Concepts of Human Rights.”
As a respected academic, she has made significant contributions to her field, serving as an internal and external examiner, supervising numerous postgraduate students, and assessing scholars for promotion to professorial rank. Publications include notable works in books, book chapters, journal articles, and conference proceedings. Professor Liman was an editor to numerous national and international journals.
Her leadership skills have been evident in various administrative roles, including Assistant Dean and Deputy Dean Students’ Affairs Division at different times respectively; Acting Head of Department of Religious Studies; Ag. Head of Department Islamic Studies; Director of Research; and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Administration, at different times). Her appointment as Vice-Chancellor on 15th April and assumption of duty on 22nd April, 2024, ushers in a new chapter in her illustrious career, one that promises to shape the future of NSUK with vision and purpose.
Professor Liman’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor is being marked by transformative changes at NSUK. Infrastructural development has breathed new life into the campus, with modernised facilities providing a conducive environment for learning and research. Academic programmes have undergone rigorous review, aligning them with global standards and industry needs, ensuring that graduates are equipped with relevant skills. Accreditation processes by both the NUC and professional regulatory bodies have been streamlined, further solidifying the university’s reputation for academic excellence.
Research and innovation have received a significant boost with registration of patents, increased output and improved global rankings reflecting the university’s growing influence.. ICT infrastructure has been overhauled, enhancing operational efficiency and creating a seamless learning experience. International partnerships have opened doors for students and faculty, fostering global collaboration and opportunities. Efforts to strengthen ethical culture, enhance staff welfare, and promote entrepreneurship have created a more inclusive and dynamic campus environment. Financial management reforms have blocked leakages and boosted revenue, ensuring the university’s long-term sustainability.
Her professional affiliations reflect her commitment to academic excellence and societal impact. She is a member of the Population Advisory Group of the National Population Commission and a Council member of Phoenix University Agwada just to mention but few. Being the President of the Nigeria Association of Female Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies, she champions women’s empowerment in education. Her fellowship with institutions like the Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals of Nigeria and the Association of Philosophy Professionals of Nigeria underscores her interdisciplinary expertise. A prolific conference attendee, she has presented papers at both national and international events, including a notable attendance and presentation of a paper at the 60th United Nation Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 60). Her recent participation in the 3rd International Conference on Sustainability: Developments and Innovation in Riyadh in February 2026 highlights her global engagement, sharing insights on pressing global challenges.
Professor Liman’s contributions to academia and society have earned her numerous accolades. She has been recognised for her academic excellence, purposefull leadership, and commitment to women’s empowerment, the receiving the following awards, fellowships and recognition, among many others:
