Bayelsa govt pledges completion of 60MW gas turbine to boost electricity

Bayelsa State governor Duoye Diri

Amid worsening power supply suffered by residents of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, and other parts of the state, the state government assured residents that the situation will soon be a thing of the past with a 60-megawatt independent gas turbine project nearing commissioning.

Residents of the state, who have suffered several postponements of the inauguration date for the gas turbine project, lamented that they have been without power for several weeks.

However, the Commissioner of Information, Strategy and Orientation, Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, has expressed the government’s enthusiasm about the commissioning of the project, expected to be performed by President Bola Tinubu.

Koku-Obiyal, who stated this yesterday while fielding questions from members of the Federated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) after the group’s independent visit to the gas turbine site at Elebele, Ogbia Local Council Area, urged residents of the state to continue supporting the state government.

She said: “The problem is the commissioning date. Over the months, we have been giving dates, but this time we want everything to be set, and we believe that the President will come and commission it.”

ALSO, MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), Enugu State, yesterday launched Quick Response System (QRT), a customer-focused service designed to speed up the repair time for electrical faults.

The facility was officially commissioned at the company’s corporate office in Enugu, which would deliver speed, responsiveness, and accountability to customers.

Managing Director of MainPower, Ernest Mupwaya, said that with the launch of the QRT, the organisation had demonstrated that it is not just making promises but “taking concrete action.

He said: “The QRT has been designed to significantly enhance our operational responsiveness by ensuring that faults across our network are addressed swiftly, efficiently, and safely.

“Our engineers and field teams have undergone targeted training, not only in rapid fault resolution, but also in customer service and safety.

“This is because we recognise that resolving a fault is not just a technical task, it is a service to a customer, a business, a household, and a community.

“To deliver on this commitment, we are deploying fully equipped response teams operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, across six operational districts—two in Abakpa, and two in Ogui, and one each in Nsukka and Awkunanaw.”
