Egbetokun mentored countless officers, instilled discipline — Disu

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has commended the retired IGP, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his enduring contributions to the Nigeria Police Force, noting that he mentored countless officers and shaped the institution with core values of discipline, diligence and excellence.

In a goodwill message, to mark Egbetokun’s thanksgiving service following his retirement, Disu described the former police boss as a distinguished officer whose career was defined by professionalism, integrity and unwavering commitment to national service.

Egbetokun, who retired on February 22, 2026, after over three and a half decades in service, was praised for providing steady leadership during critical periods and demonstrating courage in the face of complex security challenges.

Disu said the retired IGP’s tenure, which culminated in his leadership of the Force, remained a testament to purposeful leadership and visionary policing, adding that his efforts in institutional reforms, capacity building and inter-agency collaboration left a lasting imprint.

“Throughout your career, you demonstrated exceptional courage in the face of complex security challenges and provided steady leadership during critical periods in our nation’s history. Your dedication to institutional reforms, capacity building, and the strengthening of inter-agency collaboration has left an indelible mark on the Force. You consistently exemplified the highest ideals of policing. service, sacrifice, and honour, earning the respect of colleagues, subordinates, and the general public alike.”

He further noted that beyond his professional achievements, Egbetokun’s humility, intellect and patriotism stood out, inspiring officers across ranks.

The police chief also expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s contributions to national security and public safety, praying for good health and fulfilment for him in retirement.

He described the former IGP’s exit not as an end, but the culmination of a legacy built on honour, reform and dedication to the unity and safety of the nation.

“Beyond your professional accomplishments, your humility, intellect, and deep sense of patriotism have been truly inspiring. You have mentored countless officers, instilling in them the values of discipline, diligence, and excellence. The enduring impact of your leadership will continue to resonate within the Nigeria Police Force for years to come.

“As you transition into a new chapter of life, we celebrate not only your years of service but also the remarkable legacy you leave behind a legacy of honour, reform, and steadfast commitment to the safety and unity of our nation.

“On behalf of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, I convey our heartfelt appreciation for your invaluable contributions to national security and public safety. We pray that the Almighty grants you continued good health, wisdom, and fulfilment in all your future endeavours,” the statement added.
