The Taraba state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has urged Nigerians to provide urgent support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by ongoing crises in the state.
In an Easter message issued on Sunday, the state chairman, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Peter Awoshiri, appealed to individuals, faith-based organisations, and corporate bodies to assist vulnerable populations with essential relief materials.
He said the spirit of Easter, which emphasises love and compassion, should inspire Nigerians to extend generosity to those displaced by violence, noting that the IDPs are in dire need of assistance.
Awoshiri called on citizens to donate food, medicine, clothing, bedding, shelter materials, and other basic necessities, stressing that such gestures reflect the Christian obligation to care for the needy.
The association also raised concern over persistent violence in southern Taraba, particularly in Takum and Donga local government areas. It condemned the killings and destruction of property, describing the situation as tragic and unacceptable.
According to him, meaningful development cannot thrive in an environment marked by fear and instability, as he called for an immediate end to violence, retaliation, and lawlessness.
He emphasised the importance of dialogue, justice, and peaceful coexistence among communities as pathways to lasting peace.
While commending the efforts of government authorities, security agencies, and local vigilante groups, Awoshiri urged the adoption of more proactive and sustained strategies to restore peace and security in affected areas.
The CAN chairman also extended condolences to families who lost loved ones in the crises and offered prayers for the injured, seeking their quick recovery.
He further highlighted the significance of Easter as the cornerstone of the Christian faith, symbolising hope, renewal, and victory over despair, and called on Nigerians to embrace unity, tolerance, and mutual respect.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Awoshiri expressed optimism that peace would return to Taraba State, noting that the message of Easter offers hope for healing, restoration, and progress.
