Plateau Killings: Delta Govt evacuates 34 students from UniJos

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori

The Delta State Government has evacuated no fewer than 34 students of Delta origin from the University of Jos following escalating violence and killings in Plateau State.

The evacuation, described as a proactive safety measure, was carried out after the university authorities shut down academic activities amid rising insecurity in the area.

Speaking during a reception for the returning students, the State Director of Protocol, Chief Sunday Onoriode, commended the swift intervention approved by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

He noted that the operation was effectively coordinated by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs, Comrade Ezekiel Okoh.

Onoriode explained that the decision to evacuate the students became necessary in view of the deteriorating security situation and the closure of the institution.

He expressed relief that all affected students returned safely, describing the move as a reflection of responsive governance and strong coordination.

“It is an unusual time for Nigeria, especially in that part of the country, but we believe that with God, peace will be restored. When the time comes for you to return to school, you will go back and complete your studies successfully,” he said.

He also encouraged the students to take advantage of the Easter period to rest, assuring them of the government’s continued support and commitment to their welfare.

Earlier, Comrade Ezekiel Okoh disclosed that the evacuation followed a directive issued after the university announced a temporary shutdown due to security concerns.

He said the state government collaborated with key stakeholders and transport operators to ensure the safe movement of the students.

According to him, the immediate priority was to secure the students’ safety before coordinating their return home.

A student representative and Vice President of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), University of Jos chapter, Comrade Newton Miracle, described the evacuation as both challenging and timely.

“It wasn’t easy moving students under curfew conditions, but we are grateful to the governor for prioritising our safety. This shows leadership that listens and acts,” he said.
