Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, was head of the cast at the weekend, when the bigwigs in the sporting industry gathered in Lagos to honour the most outstanding performers at the Sixth Sportsville Awards.
Among the sports sector doyens at the event where Dikko bagged the Sportsville Sports Transformative Impact Award for his groundbreaking reforms in the sector were former NSC Director General, Amos Adamu, African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) President, Enitan Oshodi, and chairman of Brila Media, owners of Brila FM, Larry Izamoje, who was the chairman of the event, among others.
Speaking after receiving his award, Dikko said the award is a debt that must be paid through a continued dedication to the advancement of Nigerian sports.
He dedicated his award to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and NSC staff members.
“This is a call to do more… it’s a debt that must be paid with a total dedication to further reforms and development in Nigerian sports. I am grateful to Sportsville for this very significant honour,” Dikko said.
Oshodi was honoured as the Sports Personality of the Year, alongside promoter of the Niger Delta Games, Itiako Ikpokpo.
Edo State Sports Commission Chairman Amadin Desmond Enabulele received the Sportsville Visionary Leadership Award, while Kwame Arthur and Chuka Momah were honoured with the Sports Icon Award, respectively.
The initiator of Making of Champions, Bambo Akani, bagged the Sportsville Innovative Award, the same as Dr Femi Bankole-Alibay, for his outstanding innovations in five-a-side football in Nigeria.
Head of CAF’s safety and security, Dr Christian Emeruwa, and Chief Felix Akiga were honoured in the Achievers Category.
Those honoured in the Special Recognition Category are Godwin Kienka, Toyosi Oyetunji, Toyin Aluko, Ama-ebi Ebikpolade, Akin Afolarin, and Isaac Danladi.
Others were Fausat Dehinde-Yekini and Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, Chairman of the Edo State Football Association.
Akwa Ibom State Government and Eagle Wings FC, Benin City, received the Best Sports Facility Award for both government and private ownership, while Brila Media Group was honoured with the Excellence in Sports Media Award.
Speaking at the event, Chairman/CEO of Sportsville Communication Services, Frank Ilaboya, said the award will continue to uphold its credibility as the process of picking the awardees will not be compromised!
He said: “The Sportsville Award has come to stay, and we have our eyes solely on those truly impacting Nigerian sports across the board.”
