Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has suffered backlash on social media for a movie that portrays Yoruba women in a negative light.
The movie ‘Imperfect Match’ has a character portrayed by I.K Ogbonna lashing out at the character she portrayed, saying, “Yoruba girl, you people are very dirty”.
This didn’t sit well with netizens, who wondered why Ogunmola would produce such a movie that denigrates women of her ethnicity.
An X user, @Zainab_Folasade, said, “Producing stupid movies like this in 2026, then complaining she doesn’t get much views, a funny woman. Yoruba women are the butt of everyone’s jokes because they themselves don’t see anything wrong with it. Tell me why a sane person will produce something like this.”
Another X user, @Solarin, slammed the actress, saying, “@OgunmolaBolaji, you’re using all your skill and knowledge to bring down Yoruba women in your movie. That choice is not just disappointing, it’s wrong.”
@pearlypuss17 said, “So you’re a Yoruba person, and you created a movie of Igbos talking down on your own people. That’s so sad, bruh. I’m half Yoruba and Igbo. You people should do better.”
@funshographix said, “@OgunmolaBolaji, why would you play a role in a film that denigrates you as a Yoruba lady?”
@Neefeeeeeee said, “@OgunmolaBolaji This is disgusting though… You should kindly do better.”
@Naija_CryptoLad said, “We need to start showing these people real actions. Mass report and leave bad reviews on their social media pages.”
@LinaLeila459 said, “Action is needed. Same Bolaji. She’s always acting in all those Igbo-leaning movies where she’s the awful-looking and tattered Yoruba wife. There was one I saw recently. She was named Funke… she constantly looked unkempt until her husband started cheating on her with a girl from Imo.”
In response to the backlash, actress Bolaji Ogunmola revealed that the character she portrayed also hurled insults at the Igbo ethnic group
She shared on X, “Let’s also cut all the insults I dished out to him and his tribe in this same movie so we can start the tribal war now. It’s a film that doesn’t make what he said or what I said a statement of fact. I am worried Yoruba are the most welcoming, but what I am seeing is extremely worrisome.”
