Security operatives arrest suspected cultist over shooting of MAPOLY student in Ogun

MAPOLY

Security operatives have arrested a suspected cultist over the shooting of a student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Onikolobo, in Abeokuta South Local Council of Ogun State.

The suspect, identified as Fredrick, was arrested on April 1, 2026, following investigation by security agencies working with the Peace Initiative Committee in Ogun Central.

Fredrick was the alleged owner of the bike used in the attack and had been held by the SWAT police.

The victim was returning from school on a motorcycle when he was shot in the stomach by the armed cultists and left in a pool of blood to die.

Eyewitness said the assailants shot the ND1 student at close range after mistaking him for another target.

The incident occurred on March 27, 2026 and was allegedly connected with cult-related issues.

The student was, however, rescued by a Good Samaritan and student union members who took him to nearby hospital where he was allegedly rejected before being taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta.

The victim’s mother, Kemisola Aderogba, told The Guardian that her son was recuperating after he underwent emergency surgery and demanded justice for him.

“I want justice for my son. Those responsible must be found and made to face the law,” she said.

Meanwhile, the authorities are yet to release an official statement about the incident at the time of filing in this report.

The incident has, however, sparked renewed calls for improved security and decisive action against cultism in the state, particularly in student-populated areas.
