Obi calls for leadership reform, lauds Jonathan Foundation report launch

Former presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for a fundamental overhaul of Nigeria’s leadership recruitment process, stressing that competence and integrity must take precedence if democracy is to deliver meaningful economic growth.

Obi made the remarks on Saturday at the launch of a landmark report by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation titled “Strengthening the Nexus Between Democracy and Economic Growth in Nigeria.”

While writing on his X-Handle, he indicated that the report and subsequent panel discussions underscored Nigeria’s persistent struggles in key development areas, including healthcare, education, and poverty reduction.

He noted that despite years of democratic governance, the country has recorded declining economic well-being among citizens, alongside weakening democratic institutions.

“The report reiterated the necessary truth that we have failed in critical areas of development—health, education, and pulling our people out of poverty,” Obi stated.

He added that over the past decade, Nigeria’s democratic progress has not translated into improved living standards, describing the situation as a disconnect between governance and the welfare of citizens.

Obi emphasised that for democracy to thrive, leadership selection must be rooted in “competence, capacity, compassion, character, and commitment” to public service.

He further stressed the need to strengthen institutions, noting that independent and accountable systems are essential for sustainable development and effective governance.

“We must rebuild trust in our institutions, restore discipline in leadership, and ensure that governance translates into measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor also reiterated his belief in the country’s potential for transformation, maintaining that with the right leadership and institutional reforms, progress is achievable.

“A new Nigeria is possible,” he added.

The report launch attracted policymakers, development experts, and stakeholders who examined the relationship between democratic governance and economic performance in Nigeria, amid growing concerns over the country’s socio-economic trajectory.
