2027: BAT-IG seeks sanctions against underperforming public office holders

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

A political advocacy group, BAT Ideological Group (BAT-IG), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to impose strict political consequences on underperforming public office holders by denying them opportunities to return to office.

In an open letter on Tuesday signed by its Convener, Bamidele Atoyebi, the group described the approaching election cycle as a crucial moment to enforce accountability across all tiers of government.

BAT-IG argued that elected officials who fail to convert increased federal allocations into tangible development outcomes should not be rewarded with party nominations or re-election bids.

It maintained that poor governance has fueled persistent challenges such as insecurity, weak healthcare systems, and inadequate infrastructure, insisting that such failures must attract political consequences.

The group called on the President to extend accountability measures beyond state governors to include ministers, heads of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), members of the National Assembly, and local government chairmen.

According to the group, denying underperforming officials further political opportunities would serve as a deterrent and compel leaders to prioritise effective service delivery.

The letter also raised concerns over the management of security votes, inadequate rural infrastructure, and poor investment in primary healthcare and education, noting that these shortcomings continue to adversely affect citizens nationwide.

While reaffirming its support for the Tinubu administration, BAT-IG stressed the need for decisive action to ensure that public office holders are held accountable for their performance.

“The time is ripe for the hunter to be hunted,” Atoyebi said, urging the President to deploy his political influence to demand credible performance scorecards from office holders.

“Let it be clear that where projects do not reflect the resources allocated, such officials should be denied a return to office. Their political ambitions should not be allowed to thrive on poor performance,” he added.

He further called for sanctions to be extended to ministers, directors-general of MDAs, lawmakers, and
local government chairmen who fail to deliver, insisting that political accountability remains key to strengthening governance and aligning leadership outcomes with public expectations.
