The IREDE Foundation (TIF) has called for collective action towards equal opportunities for children with limb loss.
This was at the 2026 edition of its flagship initiative, Out On A Limb (OOAL), themed “No Limits. Just Motion,” highlighting over a decade of sustained leadership, partnership, and collective action in advancing disability inclusion for children with limb loss in Nigeria.
Founder, The Irede Foundation, Crystal Chigbu, said the campaign encourages persons living with disabilities to showcase their abilities and strengths.

She emphasised that the initiative is focused on improving access in key areas, including transportation, education and information, while ensuring that all categories of persons with disabilities are represented.
She stressed that the foundation’s work goes beyond children without limbs, aiming to create a more inclusive system that supports everyone living with disabilities.
On technological advancements, Chigbu disclosed that the foundation has integrated artificial intelligence into the production of prosthetics through 3D technology.

She revealed that the innovation has been undergoing trials for the past five to six months and is already yielding results, with one beneficiary currently using a 3D prosthetic limb.
She added that over 50 per cent of the limbs to be distributed this year will be produced using this method, which is expected to increase efficiency and reach more beneficiaries.
Chigbu also called for a shift in public perception, noting that disability advocacy should not be seen as an issue concerning only persons with disabilities, but one that involves society as a whole.

The Chairman, Board of Directors, TIF, Mr. Kunle Akinkugbe, expressed appreciation to partners, supporters, and stakeholders who have contributed to the Foundation’s journey over the past 13 years.
He acknowledged the continued support of government institutions, including the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Lagos State, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, for their role in strengthening disability inclusion efforts and supporting vulnerable populations.
The Chairman also commended the contributions of partners and collaborators whose support has been instrumental in sustaining the impact of Out On A Limb over the years.

According to him, the success of the initiative reflects a shared vision and a consistent commitment from multiple stakeholders working together to improve access and opportunity for children with limb loss.
He further emphasised that leadership in this space requires continuity, collaboration, and a long term commitment to building systems that support inclusion, noting that the progress achieved over the years is the result of collective effort rather than individual action.
Now in its thirteenth year, the annual advocacy walk has grown from a small initiative into a global movement, reaching more than 10,000 people directly and over 10 million people indirectly, with activations in over 50 locations worldwide.

Also, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, described the walk as crucial, not only to Lagos State but also on a personal level.
He stated that the initiative aligns with the state government’s commitment to inclusivity and its broader goal of ensuring that no resident is left behind, regardless of background or physical condition.
Ogunlende noted that the walk serves as a platform for advocacy and partnership, highlighting the government’s collaboration with organisations working in the disability space.

He added that the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs operates under his ministry, reinforcing the government’s institutional support for persons with disabilities.
He further explained that the state provides various forms of support to organisations, including financial assistance, policy backing and access to infrastructure, depending on their needs.
According to him, the government maintains an open-door policy to encourage engagement and foster partnerships that will improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities.
