The Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, on Friday urged the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, to refrain from partisan politics in order to safeguard the sanctity and dignity of the traditional institution.
Oba Ajibola gave the warning during a press conference held at his residence in the Sanyo area of Ibadan, where he emphasised the need for traditional rulers to remain neutral and above political interests.
According to him, the revered status of the Olubadan stool must not be compromised by involvement in political activities, noting that such actions could erode public confidence in the institution.
“My personal advice to Baba Olubadan is simple. I have nothing against him, and I hold him in high regard,” the Balogun said.
“I do not want anything that will bring his office into disrepute, because I believe strongly in the institution he represents. He should tread carefully and stay away from politics.
“The Olubadan is a revered traditional ruler, and his name should not be dragged into political matters. I want him to continue to be respected and upheld as a symbol of unity and tradition.”
Oba Ajibola stressed that traditional rulers occupy a unique position as custodians of culture and heritage, and must therefore act in ways that promote unity and cohesion among the people, regardless of political leanings.
He noted that Ibadanland has a long-standing tradition of preserving the neutrality of its traditional institution, warning that any deviation could create unnecessary tension and division within the community.
The Balogun also cautioned the Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District, to avoid actions that could conflict with his traditional responsibilities.
He urged Alli to concentrate on his role within the traditional hierarchy under the Olubadan, stressing that holding political office should not overshadow his duties as a traditional titleholder.
Oba Ajibola maintained that individuals occupying traditional positions must be mindful of their conduct, as their actions reflect not only on themselves but also on the institution as a whole.
He further called on stakeholders in Ibadanland to work collectively to protect the integrity of the traditional system, which he described as a symbol of unity, stability and continuity.
The Balogun reiterated that preserving the dignity of the Olubadan stool and the wider traditional institution remains a shared responsibility, urging all concerned to prioritise the collective interest of Ibadanland above personal or political considerations.
