Media personality and philanthropist, Emmanuel James popularly known as “Expensive,” brought together longtime friends and associates in a heartfelt reunion that celebrated shared history, enduring relationships, and the values of loyalty and gratitude that have shaped his journey.

The reunion, tagged “How We Started,” brought together longtime friends to reflect on shared struggles and growth. Expensive recalled growing up in a modest, communal environment that shaped his values and reinforced the need to stay connected to his roots.

He noted that the reunion reconnected him with friends he had not seen in decades, creating an opportunity to strengthen bonds and support those still in need. The multiple award-winning broadcaster said the event was organised to honor those who were part of his early journey, stressing that people often forget their beginnings despite the roles others played in their success.

Douglas Nna, an award-winning broadcaster with Wazobia FM Abuja, described Expensive as a “destiny helper,” noting his rise from humble beginnings and his continued commitment to uplifting others through opportunities and connections.

Associates and old friends also eulogize Ambassador James “Expensive” of Wazobia FM, Lagos, for his positive impact and philanthropic gestures.

Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, a credit analyst in a financial institution, highlighted their shared beginnings in the barracks and their efforts in the entertainment industry, performing at LTV, Galaxy TV, and SuperScreen Television. He recalled being groomed by Expensive as a dancer and child entertainer under the stage name “Expensive Chukwu.” Despite challenges such as limited resources and lack of industry access, he said their persistence and faith helped them succeed.

He added that Expensive has remained loyal to old friendships, emphasizing shared values.
Mr. Philips Odey, National Sales Manager at Maydon Pharmaceuticals Ltd., also praised Expensive’s generosity, recalling their early struggles living together in tight conditions. He said Expensive kept them motivated with encouragement, humor, and support, even during periods of hardship after their National Youth Service.

Mrs. Udeh Uchena, a longtime friend and businesswoman, spoke at the gathering which emphasized loyalty, gratitude, and enduring relationships. She recounted their over 25-year relationship dating back to their days in Ikeja barracks, highlighting how her family supported Expensive during difficult times. She noted his resilience and generosity, recalling how her father stood in as a guardian during his traditional marriage rites.

The event also featured entertainment, with music from a DJ and comedy by MC Mimiko, alongside performances by upcoming artistes. Guests were treated to food, drinks, and gifts, including coolers distributed to support small businesses.

Among attendees were Crazy Egbon, members of the Okonkwo family, Bubbling Soldier, Livingstone, Zenith, and others who travelled from far and wide.
The reunion reinforced the message that true success lies not just in achievement, but in remembering one’s roots, maintaining relationships, and giving back to others.
