Ogun waste agency, police strengthen enforcement against illegal dumping

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun

The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has partnered with the State Police Command to strengthen enforcement of environmental laws and curb indiscriminate dumping of refuse in public places.

The authority recently arrested and prosecuted 108 offenders in Abeokuta for dumping waste along roadsides and medians.

To deepen collaboration, the Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Farouk Akintunde, led a delegation to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, in Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Monday.

Akintunde said the partnership focuses on enforcing laws that prohibit indiscriminate waste disposal in public spaces.

“The partnership is in the area of enforcement of environmental and waste management laws which forbid residents from dumping refuse indiscriminately in public places such as roadsides and medians,” he said.

He commended the command for its cooperation and expressed confidence that the renewed collaboration would strengthen existing ties and improve compliance with waste management regulations.

In his response, Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s support for OGWAMA’s enforcement activities, adding that officers would intensify efforts to uphold environmental laws.

He warned residents against obstructing officials in the discharge of their duties.

The police chief also advised the agency to expand public awareness through sustained sensitisation campaigns and partnerships with non-governmental organisations, schools and community groups, including the establishment of waste marshals.

He emphasised the importance of keeping public spaces free of refuse and encouraged residents to engage designated Private Sector Participants for proper waste disposal.
