President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted a bill to the House of Representatives seeking the repeal and re-enactment of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, 2025.
The President said the move is aimed at strengthening the funding framework for police training, welfare and equipment procurement.
The request was contained in a formal correspondence read by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, at the floor of the plenary on Wednesday.
According to the President, the proposed legislative amendment is necessary to improve the management, administration and overall efficiency of the Police Trust Fund, which was created to support the Nigeria Police Force in critical operational areas.
He noted that the fund plays a central role in enhancing the capacity of the police through training and retraining programmes, provision of modern security equipment and machinery, as well as welfare support for personnel of the force.
Tinubu explained that the repeal and re-enactment of the existing law has become imperative in view of current security challenges facing the country, stressing the need for a more responsive and accountable framework for police funding.
“The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act repeal and re-enactment is imperative to provide improved management and administration of the fund, support for the training and enhancement of the skills of the Nigeria Police Force, provision of modern security equipment and machinery, and to enhance the welfare of the NPF,” the President stated.
He urged the House of Representatives to give the request expeditious consideration, expressing confidence in the legislature’s cooperation on matters of national security reform.
The Police Trust Fund, established to provide alternative funding for the police outside the traditional budgetary allocation, has in recent years been the subject of debate over transparency, effectiveness and sustainability.
