A member of the House of Representatives, Abubakar Kabir Bichi, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a ₦1.5 trillion railway project for Kano State, describing it as a major boost for economic growth and urban mobility.
Bichi, who represents Bichi Federal Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Appropriation, said the project, captured in the 2025 budget, reflects the administration’s focus on infrastructure development.
According to the lawmaker, the proposed rail system is expected to improve connectivity across Kano, ease movement within the metropolis and reinforce the state’s role as a commercial centre in northern Nigeria.
He noted that efficient transport systems are critical to economic activity, adding that modern rail networks have demonstrated their impact in major cities globally.
“The railway will facilitate trade, create opportunities and stimulate economic activities across the state,” he said.

Bichi also pointed to other ongoing projects in the region, including road infrastructure and healthcare investments, as evidence of what he described as sustained federal attention to northern Nigeria.
He cited projects such as the Kaduna–Zaria–Kano road, the Abuja–Kaduna highway and developments at the Mallam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital as part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure and public services.
The lawmaker dismissed claims that the current administration has neglected the North, arguing that multiple initiatives across sectors, ranging from agriculture to security, demonstrate a more balanced approach to development.
He added that such projects have strengthened public confidence and could influence political support ahead of future elections.
With Kano regarded as one of Nigeria’s largest commercial hubs, stakeholders have long identified transport infrastructure as key to unlocking its economic potential.
The rail project, if implemented as planned, is expected to enhance logistics, reduce travel time and support business activity within the state and beyond.
