A former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has called on Nigerian leaders to place greater emphasis on the welfare and dignity of workers, stressing that labour should be rewarded with opportunity rather than reduced to a struggle for survival.
In a goodwill message to mark International Workers’ Day, Adebayo paid tribute to Nigerian workers, describing them as the backbone of national development and key drivers of economic productivity.
He commended their resilience and contributions, noting that the nation’s progress is largely sustained by the efforts of its workforce across various sectors.
“Today, we honour the hands that build, the minds that innovate, and the spirit that refuses to quit,” he said.
The SDP chieftain, however, expressed concern over what he described as the declining value of labour, attributing the situation to policy gaps and leadership shortcomings that have left many workers struggling to meet basic needs despite their efforts.
He argued that effective leadership must ensure that hard work translates into improved living standards, economic security, and access to opportunities.
Adebayo further maintained that the true wealth of any nation lies in the wellbeing of its people, urging policymakers to adopt inclusive and people-centred economic strategies that protect workers’ rights and promote sustainable growth.
He also reiterated the need for accountable governance, warning that national progress would remain elusive if the needs of workers are not prioritised.
