The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old suspect, Bayegun Nathaniel, over the abduction and killing of a 16-year-old girl, Adegbaaju Florence, in Ogijo.
The suspect allegedly killed the victim after collecting a N500,000 ransom and dumped her body in a river within the Ogijo community.
He was arrested following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the development in a statement yesterday.
According to him, the incident occurred on April 8, 2026, at about 5:00 a.m., when the victim was abducted in Ogijo.
“Upon receiving the report, the Command immediately activated its Anti-Kidnapping response mechanism and commenced a coordinated investigation.
“Through sustained intelligence gathering and strategic operations, detectives on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., successfully arrested the suspect in connection with the case,” he said.
Babaseyi stated that the suspect confessed to carrying out the crime alone and admitted that a sum of N500,000 was paid as ransom before the victim was later killed.
He added that efforts were ongoing to recover the victim’s remains for forensic procedures, while investigations continued.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, condoled with the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and bringing perpetrators of violent crimes to justice.
The police commissioner also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide security agencies with timely and credible information.
In a separate operation, the command recovered a single-barrel gun and six live cartridges from an unidentified suspect during a stop-and-search operation along the Ayetoro–Olodo Road axis.
The incident occurred on April 23, 2026, at about 4:00 a.m., when a patrol team attached to the Ayetoro Area Command was conducting routine checks along the road.
Babaseyi said the suspect, who was riding an unregistered Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, fled after sighting the operatives from a distance.
“In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspect reportedly threw a single-barrel long gun along with six live cartridges into a nearby bush before escaping on the motorcycle,” he said.
The police spokesperson said the exhibits had been recovered and secured at the command armoury, while efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspect.
Ojajuni commended the vigilance of the operatives and reaffirmed the command’s stance against illegal possession of firearms.
He assured residents that measures were being taken to apprehend the fleeing suspect and curb criminal activities in the state.
