Echono: ‘In recognition of commitment, transparency’

Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono

When C. S. Lewis averred that “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching”, the British author, literary scholar and Anglican lay theologian probably had the likes of the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono in mind.

Without an iota of doubt, his stewardship at the foremost intervention agency has been marked by a deliberate commitment to transparency, accountability and prudent management of public resources, earning him widespread respect across government, academia, civil society and the global community.

His recent recognition by Aljazirah Nigeria and London as its Personality of the Year 2025, and further honoured him with the Tertiary Education Transformation Champion Award, was widely seen as a natural outcome of his consistent drive for reform, transparency and measurable impact within the tertiary education system.

The Chief Executive Officer of Aljazirah Nigeria and London, Dr Etuk Bassey, who presented the award, said the honour followed “several weeks of nationwide assessment” by the organisation’s award committee. The process he explained, was neither superficial nor ceremonial but rather, a rigorous attempt to evaluate the credibility, performance and ethical standing of the awardee within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.

Bassey disclosed that Aljazirah undertook an extensive, covert investigation into Echono’s conduct in office, both locally and internationally, in a bid to verify his integrity. This level of scrutiny, uncommon in many award processes, underscores the weight the organisation places on credibility and the desire to ensure that its recognitions are grounded in verifiable facts rather than perception or public relations narratives.

“We delved into the darkest corners of global finance, hunting for illicit properties and offshore shell accounts. After several months of research, I make bold to say that the Executive Secretary of TETFund is remarkably untainted and not corrupt,” he said.

According to him, even covert operations, where investigators posed as contractors and interviewed staff, yielded no evidence of misconduct. “Our findings revealed no corrupt practices of any kind involving the Executive Secretary”, he added.

Beyond this high-profile recognition, Echono’s growing list of honours further reinforces the narrative of a public servant, whose impact is both visible and measurable. He is a recipient of the national honour of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a distinction reserved for individuals, who have made significant contributions to national development. In addition, he has been named Outstanding Public Servant of the Year by Champion Newspapers, received the Education Icon Award from Vanguard Newspaper in 2024, and was honoured with the Leadership Excellence Award in Education Development at the Nigerian Patriotism Awards. He has also been recognised by the Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) as a Champion of Educational Advancement, reflecting his influence on policy direction and institutional growth within the tertiary education landscape.

These accolades, while significant, are largely reflective of deeper structural changes that have taken place under his leadership at the Fund. Over the years, the agency has transitioned from being primarily a funding body to becoming a strategic driver of educational transformation.

Through targeted investments in infrastructure, faculty development, research funding and academic collaborations, Echono has helped reposition Nigerian tertiary institutions to better compete in a rapidly evolving global knowledge economy. His emphasis on accountability mechanisms, such as stricter project monitoring and adherence to due process, has also contributed to reducing waste and improving the quality of funded projects nationwide.

Equally important is his focus on research and innovation as catalysts for national development. By encouraging institutions to prioritise problem-solving research and by facilitating partnerships between academia and industry, Echono has strengthened the link between education and economic growth. This approach aligns with broader national aspirations to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on traditional revenue streams, placing knowledge production at the centre of development planning.

In a public sector often challenged by issues of mistrust, Echono’s example offers a compelling counter-narrative. His leadership illustrates how integrity, when institutionalised, can yield tangible outcomes that extend beyond individual recognition.

It fosters confidence among stakeholders, attracts collaboration and ultimately enhances the credibility of public institutions. As Nigeria continues to grapple with the complexities of educational reform, the trajectory of TETFund under his watch provides a useful template for balancing vision with accountability.

The growing recognition of Echono’s work, both locally and internationally, signals a broader appreciation for results-driven leadership in the public service. While awards may celebrate individual achievement, they also highlight the possibilities that emerge when governance is anchored on transparency, discipline and a genuine commitment to national progress.
