Former Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Isah Idris, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress.
Idris, who currently represents Gwaram Constituency in the state assembly, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the APC ward chairman in Gwaram.
In the letter, the lawmaker stated that his decision followed careful reflection on the direction of the party and the ideals upon which it was founded.
“I wish to write and formally inform you about my decision to resign my membership from the All Progressives Congress, APC.
“As a former Speaker and founding member of the party, I hope the APC would uphold the principles and ideals it was formed.
“In view of this, I strongly believe it is the proper time for me to step aside,” he wrote.
His resignation comes shortly after the party’s screening exercise for aspirants, where Idris was reportedly screened out and replaced by Ado Yakubu Zandam.
Although the lawmaker has yet to officially declare his next political destination, sources within the state’s political circles suggest he may be considering a move to either the African Democratic Congress or the Peoples Democratic Party.
Meanwhile, a statement shared by the PDP Publicity Secretary, Umar Kyari Jitau, welcomed Idris into the opposition party, further fueling speculation over his possible defection.
