In efforts at enforcing the State Environmental Laws on indiscriminate waste disposal, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, has arrested forty-five residents for contravening the law and sentenced them to community services.
They were arrested today in Panseke, Quarry Road, and Kolobo areas of the state capital after dumping their waste indiscriminately on the roadsides, highways, and other public places
Addressing them before their community services, the Special Adviser to the Governor on environment ,Hon Farook Akintunde pointed out the implications of their offence to them which include defacing the aesthetic beauty of the state capital, spreading diseases especially airborne diseases through indiscriminate dumping of waste which has health implications as well as contaminating the underground water of the state capital which is injurious to other residents of the state.
He expressed disappointment with their behavior, noting that the offence is unpardonable, especially with massive campaign mounted against indiscriminate dumping of waste in various areas and the need to patronize government licenced Waste Collectors assigned to their communities.
Akintunde added that due to their pleas and written commitment not to run foul of the law again as well as their immediate enrollment with the Waste Collectors in their areas, they will be allowed to do community services, warning that any one of them caught again for the same offence will be prosecuted according to the state environmental laws and warned other residents of the state in the habit of dumping their waste indiscriminately to stop forthwith or await the unpleasant consequences in not too distant time.
