Former Chelsea and Super Eagles winger, Victor Moses, has explained that the London-based club’s connection with Nigeria and African supporters has grown stronger over the years due to the number of the country’s players that have represented the London club.
Moses, who won multiple trophies during his nine-year spell at Stamford Bridge, said Chelsea has the biggest fan base in Africa, adding that the likes of himself, John Obi Mikel, Celestine Babayaro and Ola Aina deepened the relationship between the club and Nigerian fans.
He described Nigeria as the heartbeat of football fandom in Africa, noting that the energy of the country’s football supporters and their unmatched passion inspired him during matches and played a major role in his career success for both club and country.
Speaking in Lagos at the weekend during the first-ever official fan engagement visit to Nigeria organised by The Famous Chelsea Football Club (CFC) in partnership with MSport, the club’s official betting partner in Africa, Moses, who was part of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations victory, said returning home to interact and connect with supporters was a special moment for him.
The event featured a watch party, fan interactions and a question-and-answer session with the former Chelsea star.
Reflecting on his nine-year career at Chelsea, Moses described the Premier League club as unique, adding that the winning culture for trophies and the quality of players at Stamford Bridge distinguished it from other clubs he represented during his career.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Moses won the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Europa League titles, becoming one of the most successful Nigerian players in Chelsea history.
The former winger highlighted Chelsea’s 2012/13 UEFA Europa League triumph and the club’s 2016/17 Premier League title under Antonio Conte among his fondest memories, adding that his success on the pitch was always driven by the desire to make fans proud.
Moses also stated that he enjoyed every second playing for the Super Eagles, adding that winning the AFCON was one of the proudest moments of his career and remained a special achievement, as well as other titles.
