Eight Jostle for Rivers ADC Governorship Ticket

African Democratic Congress (ADC)

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has said it is witnessing what it described as an “unprecedented wave of political interest and participation” ahead of the 2027 general elections, following the emergence of eight governorship aspirants on its platform.

So far, the All Progressives Congress, APC in the State has recorded at least three governorship aspirants, the State Governor, Siminalyi Fubara, Tonye Cole and an ally to Nyesom Wike, George Kelly.

In a statement issued by the party’s chairman in the state, Chukwudi Dimkpa, the ADC said the growing interest reflected increasing confidence in the party as a credible alternative political platform.

Dimkpa particularly described the former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi’s decision to seek the ADC presidential ticket as “a major milestone in the growing national momentum around the party.”

He said: “In Rivers State, the level of interest generated within the ADC has been extraordinary. No fewer than eight prominent individuals have already indicated interest in contesting for the office of Governor under the platform of the party.”

According to him, those indicating interest include former public office holders, technocrats, professionals and private sector operators, among them a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), former members of the House of Representatives, a former Executive Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), a former Chairman of NIMASA, a former Commissioner for Employment Generation, and a former Chief Medical Director of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

He added that several individuals had also shown interest in contesting Senate, House of Representatives and State Assembly seats across the state.
“What we are witnessing is not ordinary political movement. It is a convergence of experience, competence, credibility, youth energy and grassroots belief in a new political direction for Rivers State and Nigeria,” Dimkpa stated.

He further maintained that the influx of professionals and political actors into the ADC demonstrated that the party was increasingly being viewed “as the vehicle for the future,” built on “ideas, capacity, accountability, inclusion and development-driven leadership.”
