The political landscape of Benue State has undergone a significant realignment following the defection of a leading gubernatorial aspirant and several legislative candidates from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defectors, led by a frontline governorship hopeful and supported by party loyalists officially collapsed their political structures into the NDC under the leadership of Dr Raymond Edoh.
Announcing the defections in Abuja after submitting a formal resignation letter to the ADC National Secretariat, the gubernatorial aspirant stated that the move was motivated by a desire to align with a leadership built on “compassion, inclusiveness, and service to humanity.”
A statement by the Edoh’s Media Director, Dr. Emmanuel Daudu noted that the group included aspirants for the House of Representatives and the Senate, alongside local government officials and ward executives.
Sunday Atah, a prominent leader among the defectors, explained that Dr Edoh’s humanitarian record was a primary factor in the decision of many to change camp.
“We have decided to join forces with Dr Raymond Edoh because he represents the kind of leadership Benue State truly needs at this critical time.
“His humanitarian approach to leadership, accessibility to the people, and genuine concern for the masses have distinguished him from many others in the political space,” Atah said.
He further noted that the decision followed extensive consultations across various local government areas, with an overwhelming majority of stakeholders agreeing to join the NDC to support a movement that “prioritises the welfare of the people over personal interests.”
The defections he observed, is seen by political observers as a substantial boost to the NDC’s grassroots strength in Benue, where Dr Edoh has gained significant popularity through interventions targeting youths, widows, and displaced persons.
Welcoming the new members at the party’s Secretariat, Dr Raymond Edoh described the development as a clear signal that the people of Benue are “determined to embrace a new direction focused on unity, progress, and development.
“This movement is beyond politics. It is about restoring hope to our people, empowering communities, supporting the youths, protecting the vulnerable, and building a Benue State where everyone has a sense of belonging and opportunity,” Dr Edoh stated.
He assured the newcomers of equal opportunities within the party and reiterated the NDC’s commitment to agricultural transformation, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“The growing support for the NDC is a clear reflection of the people’s desire for leadership that prioritises service and accountability,” he added.
The statement suggest that this mass exit from the ADC could fundamentally alter the political equation in Benue State as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
