Press week: NUJ FCT, hospital offer free medical screening to journalists

NUJ

In a move to promote the wellbeing of media practitioners, over 300 journalists in the Federal Capital Territory have undergone free medical screening as the NUJ FCT Council flagged off activities for the 2026 Press Week in Abuja.

The medical screening conducted over the weekend by Nizamiye Hospital featured consultations and medical advice, also provided participants with access to specialists in cardiology, ophthalmology, general practice, laboratory services, pharmacy and nursing care.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, said the initiative underscored the importance of journalists prioritising their health alongside their professional duties.

She noted that many media practitioners dedicate their time to serving the public interest while often neglecting their own wellbeing.

While commending Nizamiye Hospital for its partnership and support, she said a healthy journalist is better equipped to serve society with excellence.

Ike urged journalists across the country to strengthen ethical standards in their reportage, warning that the growing spread of misinformation and propaganda poses a threat to democratic stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The press has a sacred duty to protect truth, defend accountability, and preserve the integrity of our democratic process,” she said.

She called on media practitioners to remain accurate, balanced and professional in their coverage as the country approaches another electoral cycle.

Medical representatives at the outreach, Dr Uwchukwu Chetachi, said the exercise was structured to ensure journalists had access to preventive healthcare services, early diagnosis and professional medical guidance.

She added that participants identified with serious health conditions during the screening would be referred for further treatment and management at appropriate facilities.

The medical outreach formed part of activities marking the opening of the NUJ FCT Council’s 2026 Press Week, themed: “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation.”

In his remarks at the opening ceremony, the Chairman of the Press Week Planning Committee, Obas Esiedesa, said the week-long programme would also feature capacity-building sessions and discussions focused on media safety, journalism ethics and public interest reporting.

He thanked partners and members of the planning committee for their contributions to the success of the programme.
