Medical Lecturers at UNILAG suspend duties over CONMESS implementation issues

College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL)

Academic activities at the University of Lagos have been disrupted following the commencement of an indefinite strike by medical lecturers over unresolved salary disparities linked to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

The industrial action, declared by the association representing medical lecturers, medical lecturers, stem from long-standing grievances over what they describe as inconsistent implementation of agreed salary structures within the university system.

According to the lecturers, repeated engagements with relevant authorities have failed to yield lasting resolution, prompting the decision to withdraw services until their demands are adequately addressed.

The striking lecturers argue that the pay gap between medical academics and their counterparts in other federal institutions continues to widen, affecting morale, productivity, and retention within the medical faculty.

Students in the College of Medicine are expected to be the most affected, as lectures, clinical training, and related academic activities are likely to be suspended for the duration of the strike.

University stakeholders have expressed concern over the development, warning that prolonged disruption could further strain Nigeria’s already challenged medical education system.

Efforts are reportedly ongoing by relevant authorities and stakeholders to engage the lecturers in dialogue with the aim of resolving the dispute and restoring academic activities.

The situation adds to growing concerns over industrial tensions in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, where salary structures and funding remain recurring sources of conflict.
