Abia state Governor, Alex Otti of the Labour Party, has announced that the most important impacts his administration made in its almost three years in office were in human capital development, infrastructure renewal, fiscal responsibility, and social justice, which he stated, were wrapped up in restoring the dignity of Abians.
He also said that during this period, 414 roads measuring about 864.12 kilometres, were attended to, adding that the state debt profile was reduced by about 60%.
He reported these Friday night during his monthly interactive chat media practitioners tagged “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians” which was held for the first time at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.
He said “in the last three years, we have constructed 414 roads with street lights and drainage systems consistently, indicating that a lot of them are going to be formally commissioned from next week, even as another 82 roads measuring about 212 kilometers are at different construction stages.
“We have been able to reduce our debt profile significantly by about 60%., from about 191 billion Naira in 2023 to less than 50 billion Naira at the end of 2025, and that his administration has also been positively wrapped, particularly in areas of fiscal sustainability, transparency and accountability.
According to the governor, who will turn three years in office next week, and commence it’s commemoration activities on Sunday 24, May, “the BudgIT state of the states report moved Abia from No. 17 two years ago in 2023 to No. 4 last year in 2025.
Noting that these reports (BudgIT) are independent rankings that just give an idea of how the government is being run, the governor expressed optimism that Abia state under his leadership will continue to do well.
Reporting on recovery of illegally acquired government assets, he said some have been identified during the ongoing reform exercise aimed at strengthening accountability and transparency in governance.
Governor Otti told journalists of the milestone his administration achieved in the area of lands and public buildings, stating that as at that Friday, 4,707 land Certificates of Occupancy were signed.
” Information available to me, is that that number is more than the total number of Certificates of Occupancy signed between 1999 and 2023″.
He said that working with the UN Habitat, his administration also completed the new Abia Master Plan, to launch it any moment from now. Just as it digitised land records and scanned in 4 million documents into the system.
He also gave his scorecards in some other sectors saying that in environmental sanitation, the state now evacuates about 13 tonnes of refuse weekly while over 2,000 jobs have been created through the Abia State Environmental Agency.
In the transportation sector, where he introduced electric buses, he said that another set of the electric buses would come into the state by July, while the new Bus Terminal built in Umuahia, would be commissioned on the 27th of this May, adding that the state is installing Charging Stations in Umuahia and Aba to power the electric buses initiative.
In the education and health sectors, Governor Otti reported many progress he said were made, listing building of smart schools, at Ubakala in Umuahia South and the Umuomaiukwu in Isialangwa North, recruitment of teachers, transformations in Abia State University Uturu, Abia State College of Education ( Technical) Arochukwu, Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Aba, among others.
He recalled that while 821 healthcare professionals were recruited, 771 of them had resumed duties across hospitals and primary healthcare centres in the state, adding that over 93,000 residents have enrolled in the state Health Insurance scheme , and that 277 primary healthcare centres have been retrofitted across the state.
“Out of the 277 healthcare centres retrofitted, 200 were handled by the state government while 77 were supported by the World Bank, with 121 of them fully functionalised”.
Updating the scenario in tertiary health, governor Otti told journalists during the media parley that reconstruction works are ongoing at the Ikwuano, Arochukwu, Okeikpe and Ohafia General Hospitals, while the Amachara and Umunneato General Hospitals, and Abia State University Teaching Hospital Aba, are undergoing remodeling and major upgrades, concluding with pledgen to subsist working for the restoration of the dignity of Abians.
