… supports peaceful democratic transition in Benin republic

The Nigerian Army, acting on the directive of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, deployed a company of troops to the Republic of Benin in April 2026 as part of efforts to support regional stability and prevent any breakdown of law and order during the country’s electioneering period.

Although not assigned to election duty roles, the deployed troops were strategically positioned to provide a stabilising security presence before, during, and after the electoral process.

The mission was designed to deter potential security threats, bolster public confidence, and reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance and regional cooperation within West Africa.

Operating under Operation ATILEHIN ALAFIYA II, the troops maintained sustained operational readiness throughout their deployment. They conducted routine patrols, monitored key locations, and maintained visible security coverage across strategic areas within Cotonou and surrounding environments.

The deployment later transitioned into active support for security arrangements during the presidential inauguration of President Romuald Wadagni. On the day of the ceremony, Nigerian Army personnel were positioned early at designated strategic points, including the main venue and surrounding locations, forming a layered security network that ensured a peaceful and orderly event.

The Commanding Officer provided direct oversight at the inauguration site, while additional troops were deployed across static positions. Mobile patrol units also conducted area domination operations, enhancing situational awareness and discouraging any potential security disruptions throughout the ceremony.

The successful execution of the mission was described as a demonstration of the Nigerian Army’s operational readiness, professionalism, and capacity for rapid deployment in support of regional peace and stability.

It also reinforced Nigeria’s role in advancing democratic governance and security cooperation within the West African sub-region under the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops for their discipline, resilience, and professionalism, noting that their conduct reflects the core values of the Nigerian Army.

The Army reaffirmed its commitment to its constitutional responsibilities while continuing to contribute meaningfully to peace support operations and regional security initiatives.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, alongside other high-level dignitaries from Nigeria.
