The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has warned that participation in the national trials is mandatory for athletes seeking to represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The trials, set for June 20-22 at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, will determine Nigeria’s track and field representatives in what promises to be a fiercely contested championship.
The federation has reintroduced its long-standing slogan, “No Trials, No Participation,” declaring that only athletes who compete in Lagos will be eligible for selection.
However, according to sportsNow.com.ng, the AFN has not publicly acknowledged past lapses, recalling that the slogan was repeatedly undermined in previous editions, most notably during the Paris 2024 Olympics, when the principle was brutally exposed.
According to the online platform, star sprinter Seye Ogunlewe was denied a place despite attending the trials while those who did not were selected, sparking controversy and criticism of inconsistent enforcement.
“This time, the expectation is clear: the rule must be applied firmly to restore credibility and fairness,” it stated.
The three-day event will feature 32 track and field disciplines for men and women.
Sprint events viz the 100m, 200m, and 400m will be restricted to athletes who have achieved the prescribed qualifying standards, while other events remain open to wider participation.
Athletes are expected to arrive in Lagos on June 19, with departures scheduled for June 23. Accommodation will be provided for those who have met the qualifying benchmarks, with the official list of eligible athletes to be released soon.
AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, has urged stakeholders, enthusiasts, and fans to support the athletes, emphasising that the trials are not just a competition but a test of discipline, commitment, and national pride.
